Antibiotic nanoparticles fight drug-resistant bacteria
Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem, especially among a type of bacteria that are classified as “Gram-negative.” These bacteria have two cell membranes, making it more difficult for drugs to penetrate and kill the cells. READ MORE
Experts get gold nanoparticles using mimosa that fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria
MOSCOW, July 12. /TASS/ An international research team from Mexico, India, and the Siberian Federal University (SFU) have mastered the synthesis of gold-containing nanoparticles by using bacteria residing inside the sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica), the press office said. The compounds obtained show marked antibacterial properties. According to the researchers who initiated the study, the… Read more »

Dutch scientists discover favorable conditions for growth of Legionella bacteria
The bacteria that cause Legionnaire’s disease grow well in warm tap water installations with ample dissolved organic matter–conditions that support the growth of biofilms. The research is published January 6th in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology. READ MORE

Open Access paper: Barriers to effective Legionella control in a changing world: a practitioner’s view
Inhalation of aerosols containing Legionella pneumophila, a water-borne bacteria commonly found in natural and man-made water systems, is the main causative agent of Legionnaires’ disease (LD). Approximately 10 – 15% of all reported cases of LD result in fatality, with susceptibility to the disease being higher in immunosuppressed patients, men over 45 years of age,… Read more »
