In the wake of a positive test for bacteria that may have caused Legionnaires’ disease at a Midlothian elementary school, the Chesterfield County government is ramping up scrutiny of the local school system’s facility inspection and maintenance regimen.
According to Leslie Haley, chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors, staff in the county’s Risk Management and Internal Audit departments have been assigned to “provide recommendations for best practices moving forward.”
“The county is actively working to establish uniform protocols to ensure a more even and appropriate standard of care for publicly owned assets,” Haley said in a press release issued by the county last Friday.
The Virginia Department of Health announced last month that there have been 10 confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease in Chesterfield since May 1.
